Notes that are sharp or flat help composers give some variety to music. Here for revision we are again explaining sharp notes & flat notes in detail. In our previous keyboard lesson ( Learn Keyboard) we have defined in detail about sharp & flat notes. C major Scale Notes (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C) C–D In the same way the interval between C and D is a tone. Two semitones add up to a larger interval, called a tone because we have gone up two semitones in total. The interval between the C and the black note to its right is a semitone. Or simple the distance between two notes is called an interval.

A semitone is a interval between two white keys without being separated by a black key. A tone is the interval between two white keys separated by a black key. Tones and semitones are easily viewable on piano or keyboard instruments.

To know tones & semi tones concept is very important for learning piano or keyboard. Here for revision we are again explaining tones and semi tones in detail. In our previous keyboard lesson ( Learn Keyboard) we have defined about tones & semi tones. The major scale follows the formula “whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half” or WWH“whole” and “half” do not refer to any of the notes: they describe the distances between them.

Half steps and whole steps allow us to describe a scale as a series of jumps. It depends on whether or not a black note is between them. The distance from one white note to the next is sometimes a half step and sometimes a whole step. A distance of two half steps is called a whole step. On a music keyboard, the distance from any note to the nearest note on the right or the left is called a half step. Major Scale = whole step – whole step – half step – whole step – whole step – whole step – half step To simplify, you can memorize this formula to form a major scale: C Major is the most common scale in all Western music and there are eight notes in C Major scale. If you’ve played these C D E F G A B C notes on your keyboard – you’ve just played a Major Scale. For example, the black key next to C may either be a C# or a Db. The name of the black keys (and some white keys as well) varies depending on whether it’s a sharp or a flat. The white key to the left of two black keys is always a C, now moving to the next white keys on the right we have D – E – F – G – A – B then back to C again. Starting from one C and moving upwards to the next C produces the notes: C D E F G A B C In a keyboard you will see the familiar repeating pattern of notes. It consists all the white keys from any starting C to the next.

In C Major Scale you may play the song “ik pyar kaa nagma hai”. The simple, sing-along, nursery rhymes and folk songs we learn as children, or Qomi Tarana, Pak Ser Zameen: Most music in a major key has a bright sound that people often describe as cheerful, inspiring and excitingn. Major scales all follow the same interval pattern. A scale is a list of all the notes that begins with a specific key. Most of the music of Eastern Asia is based upon thaat and ragas. That is one of the things that make it instantly recognizable as Western music. Kavita Krishnamurthy : ‘Yeh Kya Hua’ ( Amar Prem) and ‘Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna’ ( Kudrat). For centuries, most Western music has been based on major and minor scales. Philosophy became palatable and eventually a chartbuster. He took a very casual approach to honour one of the finest works of Anand Bakshi and Pancham Da. But once again, Kishoreda played his master stroke.

There were full chances of this song being a dull affair loaded with serious 'gyaan'. 'Zindagi Ke Safar Me' to me is the height of philosophy ever cocooned in a mainstream Bollywood song. But, look at the ease Kishoreda croons this song with. The way he merges Raag Khamaj into Kalavati makes it an extremely tricky song to render. 'Kuch Toh Log' is a very complex composition by Pancham Da (R. ‘Kuch Toh Log Kahenge’ ( Amar Prem) and ‘Zindagi Ke Safar Mein Guzar Jaate'( Aap Ki Kasam) are the two unparalleled masterpieces by Kishoreda. I have to name at least 2 songs as 1 will not do justice to my fannism for the legend. Manoj Muntashir : Sometimes, feel, duniya me sirf do tarah ki aawazein hain. Ek 'Kishore' hai. Baaki sab 'Shor' hai. Among these, my favourites are ‘Phir Wahi Raat Hai’ ( Ghar), ‘Chand Churake Laya Hoon’( Devta), ‘Jidhar Dekhoon Teri Tasveer Nazar Aati Hai’ ( Mahaan).” Varun Grover : Apart from the hundreds of Kishore Kumar’s celebrated songs, there are gems that don’t get that much love.
